CafeNET Lambton Quay Extension Launched Today

5 December 2003

Kerry Prendergast, Mayor of Wellington, cut the ceremonial cable today, and announced the CaféNET Lambton Quay Hot Zone open. CaféNET is powered by an access engine developed in house by Katipo Communications.

Lambton Quay is New Zealand's highest pedestrian count street. It is now covered end to end by Citylink's CaféNET wireless service, creating a hot zone of connectivity. The rollout of access points was sponsored by Wellington City Council.

CaféNET is a broadband Wi-Fi service. Other mobile Internet services such as Telecom's Mobile Jetstream and Vodafone's Mobilise service offer speeds of averaging 40-80kbs using a card that costs around $1000. CaféNET users experience speed up to 10Mbs (average is 3Mbs), and a Wi-Fi card for your laptop starts at $100. CaféNET is up to 1000 times faster than these products, and at a cost of $20 for 70Mb of traffic, is a darn site cheaper.

Free CafeNET Weekends In December

To celebrate the launch, CaféNET will be free every weekend in December. Wellington City Council websites can also be browsed for free at anytime before logging on, over a CaféNET connection. The Access Engine we have developed, gives Citylink staff control over these services.
