Job - Designer Wanted

10 March 2003

Our designer Rebecca heads off on maternity leave for 6 months at Easter. Katipo is looking to employ a replacement for the duration of her leave, with the potential for the position to become permanent.

How to Apply

Send an e-mail to rachel@katipo.co.nz by Friday 28th March. Please include some information about yourself and a link to your CV online, or portfolio.

Ideally we would like someone to start on or around the 14th of April so that you get some hand-over time.

Key Roles

  • Architecture and design to end of concept stage:
The majority of Katipo Communications current design work is developing websites, both for the internet and for private intranets. Your main role will be to work with clients and members of the Katipo team to plan sites and how they will function, then develop designs to meet the brief. Design concepts are usually presented either as online slide shows, or as printed presentations.

  • Some HTML and production skills: While we don't expect you to be an HTML whizz kid, we have found having some HTML skills and an awareness of styles and stylesheets to be a real advantage. If you can code your own designs to the point where they look like you intended, then our production staff can make them "work" like you want. If you can do that without the aid of Dreamweaver or other WYSIWYG editing programmes then all the better.

  • Assisting production staff with additional images and elements:
You will be our Photoshop and drawing package specialist, so will be expected to create additional graphics, buttons, photograph manipulations where necessary to enable HTML production and coding of the concept.

  • Quality control of the integrity of the design:
While there are likely to be negotiations necessary where design ideals and programming possibilities clash, or where trade offs between design and speed are required, once these are resolved you will ensure that the design is produced aesthetically correctly.

Qualities

  • Great design skills: Well we would say that. We want to be able to "skite" about your work, be the envy of our peers etc.

  • Team worker: While we work in virtual offices, Katipo Communications still functions very much as a team, and you will be a vital part of our team. We do a lot of our day to day communication using E-mail and IRC - Internet Relay Chat, so being able to type, and communicate effectively in writing is a must.

  • Self motivated: Working without others physically near you or watching over your shoulder can be de-motivating, it's important that you feel comfortable setting your own goals on a day to day basis.

  • Comfortable with clients: You'll be working directly with clients in the public and private sectors, as a good designer you will also need good people and presentation skills.

  • Keen to keep learning: The Internet changes rapidly, and we pride ourselves on keeping up with new developments. We want a designer who likes to do and learn new things, and isn't phased by the "techy" nature of the work we do.

Hours, Terms of Employment etc

Currently the design role is on average 30 hours per week, and a work from home role. We will need to you to be flexible about the hours you work.

The position will suit someone who has a home office, perhaps has been freelancing, but would like a regular income for a time, or if you would like to get back into work, without getting into an office then it might be for you.
